Hügelkultur (“hill culture”) is a method of raised bed planting in which deadfall and other excess woody material is buried beneath layers of biomass, compost, and soil in a mound shape, such that the woody biomass in the center gradual decomposes, retaining water and slowly releasing nutrients over time.
